EPUB Converter

Open an EPUB, inspect its title and author, and export the book as plain text, Markdown, HTML, or a print-ready document.

What EPUB Converter helps you do

EPUB files are zipped XHTML bundles, which is why so many apps refuse to open them and why copying a quote out of one is awkward. This tool unzips the book, follows its spine, and produces clean text, Markdown, or a print-ready document without sending the file anywhere. It is useful for notes, translation drafts and accessible copies of books you already own.

The EPUB is unzipped and parsed in your browser, and every export is assembled on your device. The book file is never uploaded.

How it works

The EPUB is unzipped and its package document is read to find the spine, which defines the reading order. Each section is parsed, its headings become chapter titles, and the content is serialized to text, Markdown or HTML. The print view applies a readable layout and lets the browser paginate the document into a PDF.

How to use EPUB Converter

  1. Drop an EPUB file, or browse to select one from your device.
  2. Check the detected title, author, chapter count, and word count.
  3. Download TXT, Markdown, or HTML, or open the print view and choose Save as PDF.
  4. Review a chapter or two before relying on the export for a long book.

When to use it

  • Pull a book's text into notes, a document, or a translation tool.
  • Convert a public-domain EPUB into Markdown for a static site.
  • Produce a printable or PDF copy of an EPUB you already own.
  • Extract a chapter for a quotation or a literature review.
  • Check the reading order and chapter count of a book file.
  • Create an accessible text version for a screen reader or search.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it on a DRM-protected book; the tool does not bypass encryption.
  • Do not expect the publisher's fonts, page size or styling to survive.
  • Do not redistribute a converted book unless the licence allows it.

Example

A public-domain novel is converted to Markdown for a static site. The spine yields 24 chapters, the headings become Markdown headings, and the images are inlined in the HTML preview. The Markdown export drops the illustrations, so they are saved separately from the HTML view.

What you can do with EPUB Converter

  • Open an unencrypted EPUB file in the browser.
  • Read the title, author, chapter count and word count.
  • Follow the book's spine order for chapters.
  • Export plain text, Markdown or HTML.
  • Inline images in the HTML and print views.
  • Open a print view for Save as PDF.

Example: pull quotes into notes

Drop the EPUB and check the detected title and author. A book with unusual metadata may show a generic title, which is harmless for the text export.

Choose text or Markdown depending on where the notes will live. Text is easiest for a translation tool; Markdown keeps headings and structure for a docs site.

Open the print view and use the browser's Save as PDF when a paginated copy is needed, rather than a screenshot or an image-only export.

What to know before you start

  • DRM-protected EPUBs cannot be opened; the tool does not bypass encryption.
  • Publisher fonts and page styling are not preserved, only structure and content.
  • Images survive in HTML and print output but are dropped from TXT and Markdown.
  • The print view depends on your browser's print dialog to produce the PDF.
  • Complex footnotes, sidebars and tables may be simplified.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a DRM-protected store purchase to open.
  • Assuming images will be present in the TXT or Markdown export.
  • Treating the print view as a pixel-perfect copy of the publisher's layout.
  • Editing the exported text without checking the chapter order.
  • Redistributing a converted book without checking the licence.

Troubleshooting

If the book will not open, it may be DRM-protected or corrupted. Try another unencrypted EPUB to confirm the tool works.

If chapter names are generic, the book uses headings the parser does not recognize; the text is still in the correct order.

If images are missing from Markdown, use the HTML or print view, or extract the images from the EPUB separately.

If the PDF has no page numbers, add them through the browser's print settings or a PDF tool afterwards.

If the export is very large, convert one chapter at a time where the tool allows it.

If a chapter is missing, the spine may not list it or the book may use a navigation file that differs from the reading order. Compare the chapter count with a reader app before assuming the conversion dropped content.

  • XHTML and CSS provide the content structure inside the book.
Structure survives, styling does not
  • DRM books cannot be opened.
  • Images survive in HTML and print.
  • Use the browser's Save as PDF for pagination.
