EXIF Viewer & GPS Remover

Inspect a photo's hidden metadata, including GPS coordinates, then download a clean copy with those details stripped out.

What EXIF Viewer & GPS Remover helps you do

Photos carry more than pixels. Camera settings, editing software, and often the exact GPS coordinates of where a picture was taken are stored inside the file. This tool reads those fields and then rewrites the file without them, so you can share a photo without publishing your location. It is a check-and-clean step before posting a photo or sending a deliverable.

Photos are parsed and rewritten in your browser. The file is never uploaded, and the cleaned copy is written to your device without a server round trip.

How it works

A JavaScript EXIF library parses the file's metadata blocks. For JPEG, the tool removes APP segments that carry EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments while keeping the compressed image data and the ICC color profile. For PNG, it removes text chunks such as eXIf, tEXt and iTXt. Other formats are decoded and re-encoded as JPG, which changes the pixels slightly.

How to use EXIF Viewer & GPS Remover

  1. Drop a photo, or browse to select one from your device.
  2. Review the metadata fields and the GPS coordinates, if any were recorded.
  3. Select Remove metadata, then download the cleaned copy.
  4. Re-check the cleaned file if the photo will be published publicly.

When to use it

  • Share a photo publicly without revealing where it was taken.
  • Check a marketplace or listing photo for hidden camera and location data.
  • Strip editor and software fields before sending a client deliverable.
  • Audit a photo before uploading it to a public gallery.
  • Remove comments or captions embedded by an editor.
  • Check whether a photo still contains a location after an export.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it to restore metadata that another app already removed.
  • Do not expect lossless stripping for WebP, HEIC or TIFF; those are re-encoded.
  • Do not treat metadata removal as anonymization of the image content itself.

Example

A phone photo of a home office includes GPS coordinates and the phone model. The metadata is removed from the JPEG, the color profile is preserved, and the cleaned file is uploaded to a listing. Re-opening it confirms the GPS field is gone while the image still looks identical.

What you can do with EXIF Viewer & GPS Remover

  • Read EXIF camera, lens, date and orientation fields.
  • Show GPS coordinates when the photo contains them.
  • Display editing software, comments and text metadata.
  • Strip metadata from JPEG and PNG losslessly.
  • Preserve the color profile while removing the rest.
  • Download a cleaned copy without uploading the photo.

Example: share a photo without location data

Drop the photo and read the fields. If GPS coordinates are present, the location is embedded and will travel with the file unless it is removed.

Select Remove metadata and download the cleaned copy. For JPEG and PNG, the image data is copied and only the metadata blocks are dropped, so the picture does not lose quality.

Re-open the cleaned file in the tool to confirm the GPS and camera fields are gone before posting it.

What to know before you start

  • JPEG and PNG metadata is removed losslessly by dropping container segments and text chunks.
  • WebP, HEIC, TIFF, and other formats are re-encoded as JPG, which slightly reduces quality.
  • Metadata that was already removed by another app cannot be recovered or displayed.
  • The tool shows and removes metadata; it does not restore lost capture details.
  • It does not detect faces, objects or other image content that could identify a place.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a social platform always strips metadata before publishing.
  • Removing metadata from a JPEG and then editing the cleaned copy again, which may add new metadata.
  • Expecting a lossless strip for every format.
  • Forgetting that screenshots and edited exports may have no GPS to begin with.
  • Deleting the original before checking the cleaned copy.

Troubleshooting

If no GPS appears, the camera may not have recorded it, the app may have stripped it on export, or the photo may be a screenshot.

If the cleaned file still shows fields, an editor may have written new metadata after the strip; re-run the tool on the final file.

If a non-JPEG format changes quality, that is expected because it is re-encoded as JPG.

If colors shift, check whether the color profile survived; JPEG APP2 and PNG iCCP profiles are preserved by the tool.

If the photo will not load, its format may not be supported or the file may be corrupted.

Related standards and documentation

  • Exif 2.32 defines the camera metadata stored in JPEG and TIFF files.
  • XMP and IPTC are separate metadata vocabularies that the tool also removes.
Check the fields, then strip
  • GPS travels with the file unless removed.
  • JPEG and PNG strips are lossless.
  • Other formats are re-encoded as JPG.
