What PDF Page Numbers helps you do
Stamp a page number on every page of a PDF so each sheet carries a clear position reference. Choose the starting number and one of three fixed positions, which matters when a document continues from an earlier part. The numbers are drawn as small gray text rather than interactive fields.
Page numbering is applied locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded to Haivix.
How it works
A PDF stores positioned drawing instructions rather than flowing paragraphs, which is why editing one is different from editing a document. Page content, fonts, images and annotations are separate objects, and a page only carries a text layer if the producer wrote one. Most tools here rebuild or render the file in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js; the formats that need a full office engine, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A and HTML, use the Haivix service and say so in their privacy note. Every tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched. Because content is placed by coordinates, extraction often returns text runs in visual order rather than sentences, and columns or tables can arrive interleaved.
How to use PDF Page Numbers
- Load the PDF and choose where the numbers should appear.
- Set the starting number for the sequence.
- Apply the numbering and download the PDF.
- Check the first and last pages for placement.
When to use it
- Number the pages of a printed report or contract.
- Continue numbering from a previous document.
- Add page references before circulating a long file.
- Number an appendix that starts after the main body.
- Prepare a packet where each page must be cited.
- Add a visible sequence to a scanned bundle.
When not to use it
- Do not use it for Bates numbering or complex prefix formats.
- Do not expect the numbers to become form fields or bookmarks.
- Do not number a document that already has printed page numbers without checking for duplicates.
Example
A ten-page PDF numbered from the bottom center gains 1 through 10 on its pages. Starting at 21 continues a series from a previous document. The label is 12-point text placed 24 points from the edge, so it sits close to the margin rather than inside the text block.
What you can do with PDF Page Numbers
- Number every page in the document.
- Start the sequence at any number.
- Place numbers at the bottom center, bottom right or top right.
- Keep the original page content intact.
- Skip a format setup; the tool uses a fixed 12-point label.
- Run the numbering locally in the browser.
Example: work on a copy and check the output
Keep the original file. These tools produce a download rather than editing in place, so a failed operation never damages the source.
Check whether the PDF has a real text layer before relying on extraction. A scan is an image, so text tools return little or nothing until OCR has run.
Unlock encrypted files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be reordered, cropped or annotated until it has been opened with the correct password.
Review the output before sending it on. Fonts can substitute, overlays do not always remove what is underneath, and page boxes can shift content near the edges.
Note the page size and orientation before laying anything out. A mixed document can contain portrait and landscape pages, and a tool that assumes one size may crop or offset the others.
Keep a note of the operation and its settings. If a recipient questions the result, reproducing it from the original is faster than guessing which options were used.
What to know before you start
- Numbers are drawn onto the page and are not interactive fields.
- Numbering starts where you set it, so continuing a series requires the correct starting value.
- There are only three positions and no control over font, size or prefix.
- The tool numbers all pages; it cannot skip a cover page.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that the starting number affects every page, not just the first.
- Numbering a document that already has visible page numbers.
- Expecting a custom font, size or prefix.
- Numbering a signed document and altering the signed bytes.
Troubleshooting
If the numbers overlap existing content, choose a different position.
If numbering starts at the wrong value, check the start field.
If a page is missing a number, confirm it is part of the loaded PDF.
If the file will not load, unlock it first.
