What PDF Rotate helps you do
Rotate PDF pages by 90, 180 or 270 degrees to fix a scan that came out sideways or a document saved in the wrong orientation. The tool sets the rotation on every page, so it is an all-or-nothing correction rather than a per-page editor. The file is rewritten with the new orientation and downloaded.
Rotation is applied in your browser with a local PDF library. The file never leaves your device.
How it works
A PDF stores positioned drawing instructions rather than flowing paragraphs, which is why editing one is different from editing a document. Page content, fonts, images and annotations are separate objects, and a page only carries a text layer if the producer wrote one. Most tools here rebuild or render the file in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js; the formats that need a full office engine, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A and HTML, use the Haivix service and say so in their privacy note. Every tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched. Because content is placed by coordinates, extraction often returns text runs in visual order rather than sentences, and columns or tables can arrive interleaved.
How to use PDF Rotate
- Load the PDF and check the current orientation.
- Choose a rotation angle.
- Apply it and download the result.
- Reopen the file to confirm the pages display upright.
When to use it
- Straighten landscape pages that were scanned in portrait.
- Fix a single upside-down page in an otherwise correct document.
- Correct orientation before sending a file to print.
- Normalize a batch of pages scanned in mixed directions.
- Make a sideways table readable on screen.
- Prepare a document for a viewer that ignores page rotation.
When not to use it
- Do not use it when only one page needs rotating; the tool applies the angle to every page.
- Do not expect it to re-render or improve scan quality.
- Do not rotate a signed document if the signature covers page orientation.
Example
A sideways-scanned page rotated 90 degrees clockwise displays upright without changing its content. Because every page receives the same absolute angle, running the tool twice does not add 90 degrees each time; the second run replaces the rotation rather than stacking it. A document with mixed orientations needs a different tool.
What you can do with PDF Rotate
- Rotate all pages by 90 degrees clockwise.
- Rotate all pages by 180 degrees.
- Rotate all pages by 270 degrees.
- Set a consistent orientation across the document.
- Download the rotated PDF.
- Run the change locally in the browser.
Example: work on a copy and check the output
Keep the original file. These tools produce a download rather than editing in place, so a failed operation never damages the source.
Check whether the PDF has a real text layer before relying on extraction. A scan is an image, so text tools return little or nothing until OCR has run.
Unlock encrypted files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be reordered, cropped or annotated until it has been opened with the correct password.
Review the output before sending it on. Fonts can substitute, overlays do not always remove what is underneath, and page boxes can shift content near the edges.
Note the page size and orientation before laying anything out. A mixed document can contain portrait and landscape pages, and a tool that assumes one size may crop or offset the others.
Keep a note of the operation and its settings. If a recipient questions the result, reproducing it from the original is faster than guessing which options were used.
What to know before you start
- Rotation adjusts page orientation metadata and display but does not re-render the page at higher quality.
- Rotating a page does not rotate annotations independently in every viewer.
- The angle is applied to all pages, not selected ones.
- It sets an absolute rotation rather than adding to the existing one.
Common mistakes
- Expecting per-page rotation from a tool that rotates the whole document.
- Applying 90 degrees to a file that also has upright pages.
- Thinking repeated runs accumulate rotation; they set an absolute value.
- Rotating a signed PDF and invalidating the signature.
Troubleshooting
If some pages still look wrong, they had a different starting orientation.
If the rotation seems to have no effect, the viewer may ignore the page rotation setting.
If the content is clipped after rotation, the page box and content were not reflowed.
If the file will not load, unlock it first.
