PDF Summarizer

Summarize PDF content with AI.

What PDF Summarizer helps you do

Generate a short summary of a PDF's text using the Haivix AI service. The text is extracted in your browser, the first 10,000 characters are sent to the model, and the summary comes back as text. It helps when you need the gist of a long file quickly.

The document text is sent to Haivix AI endpoints to generate the summary. Do not submit confidential, medical, legal or regulated content.

How it works

A PDF stores positioned drawing instructions rather than flowing paragraphs, which is why editing one is different from editing a document. Page content, fonts, images and annotations are separate objects, and a page only carries a text layer if the producer wrote one. Most tools here rebuild or render the file in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js; the formats that need a full office engine, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A and HTML, use the Haivix service and say so in their privacy note. Every tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched. Because content is placed by coordinates, extraction often returns text runs in visual order rather than sentences, and columns or tables can arrive interleaved.

How to use PDF Summarizer

  1. Load the PDF and let the tool extract its text.
  2. Run the summarizer and wait for the AI response.
  3. Read the summary and compare it with the source headings.
  4. Copy the summary into your notes.

When to use it

  • Get the key points of a long report before reading it fully.
  • Produce a summary for notes or a meeting.
  • Triage several documents quickly.
  • Draft an abstract from a paper's text.
  • Condense meeting minutes into action points.
  • Decide whether a document is worth reading in full.
  • Give a colleague a quick brief before a meeting.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it as the only review of a contract or medical document.
  • Do not summarize a scanned PDF without OCR; there is no text to send.
  • Do not submit confidential or regulated text to the AI service.

Example

A multi-page report is reduced to a paragraph covering its main findings. Only the first 10,000 characters are considered, so a very long document is summarized from its opening rather than its whole content. A scan with no text layer produces almost no input, and the summary is correspondingly thin.

What you can do with PDF Summarizer

  • Extract the PDF text locally.
  • Send the extracted text to the AI summarizer.
  • Return a concise summary as text.
  • Show the extracted character count.
  • Report the remaining AI requests.
  • Leave the original PDF unchanged.

Example: work on a copy and check the output

Keep the original file. These tools produce a download rather than editing in place, so a failed operation never damages the source.

Check whether the PDF has a real text layer before relying on extraction. A scan is an image, so text tools return little or nothing until OCR has run.

Unlock encrypted files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be reordered, cropped or annotated until it has been opened with the correct password.

Review the output before sending it on. Fonts can substitute, overlays do not always remove what is underneath, and page boxes can shift content near the edges.

Note the page size and orientation before laying anything out. A mixed document can contain portrait and landscape pages, and a tool that assumes one size may crop or offset the others.

Keep a note of the operation and its settings. If a recipient questions the result, reproducing it from the original is faster than guessing which options were used.

What to know before you start

  • AI summaries can omit nuance or misstate details, so verify anything important against the source.
  • The extracted text is sent to Haivix AI endpoints and usage is limited per day.
  • Only the first 10,000 characters are summarized.
  • Scanned documents need OCR before summarization.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the whole document was read when it exceeded 10,000 characters.
  • Treating the summary as a substitute for the source.
  • Uploading a scan without OCR.
  • Ignoring the daily AI request limit.

Troubleshooting

If the summary is empty, the PDF may have no text layer.

If key points are missing, they may sit beyond the character limit.

If the request fails, the AI quota may be exhausted.

If the summary seems wrong, verify the extracted text; columns can arrive interleaved.
