PDF to PNG

Convert PDF pages to PNG images.

What PDF to PNG helps you do

Render each PDF page into a PNG image in the browser with pdf.js. PNG keeps sharp edges and is a good fit for diagrams, slides and document previews. The renderer uses a fixed scale of two, so there is no resolution picker; each page downloads as its own file.

Rendering happens locally in your browser; your PDF is not uploaded.

How it works

A PDF stores positioned drawing instructions rather than flowing paragraphs, which is why editing one is different from editing a document. Page content, fonts, images and annotations are separate objects, and a page only carries a text layer if the producer wrote one. Most tools here rebuild or render the file in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js; the formats that need a full office engine, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A and HTML, use the Haivix service and say so in their privacy note. Every tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched. Because content is placed by coordinates, extraction often returns text runs in visual order rather than sentences, and columns or tables can arrive interleaved.

How to use PDF to PNG

  1. Load the PDF with the file drop area.
  2. Run the conversion and let the renderer work through the pages.
  3. Watch for the per-page downloads in your browser.
  4. Check the page count against the status message.

When to use it

  • Turn PDF diagrams into PNG images for a document or slide.
  • Export a page as an image for a web preview.
  • Create sharp page images for further editing.
  • Capture a single page as a thumbnail image.
  • Move a PDF page into a design tool that does not import PDFs.
  • Share a page image in a chat that does not preview PDFs.

When not to use it

  • Do not use it for searchable text; PNG is an image format.
  • Do not expect one combined archive; each page downloads separately.
  • Do not use it for photo-heavy pages where JPEG would be much smaller.

Example

A three-page PDF produces page-1.png, page-2.png and page-3.png. The renderer draws each page at twice its base scale, so a letter-size page produces a reasonably large image rather than a thumbnail. A text-heavy page stays sharp because PNG is lossless.

What you can do with PDF to PNG

  • Render every page as a PNG image.
  • Keep text and line art crisp.
  • Handle multi-page documents.
  • Download one file per page.
  • Run entirely in the browser.
  • Leave the original PDF untouched.

Example: work on a copy and check the output

Keep the original file. These tools produce a download rather than editing in place, so a failed operation never damages the source.

Check whether the PDF has a real text layer before relying on extraction. A scan is an image, so text tools return little or nothing until OCR has run.

Unlock encrypted files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be reordered, cropped or annotated until it has been opened with the correct password.

Review the output before sending it on. Fonts can substitute, overlays do not always remove what is underneath, and page boxes can shift content near the edges.

Note the page size and orientation before laying anything out. A mixed document can contain portrait and landscape pages, and a tool that assumes one size may crop or offset the others.

Keep a note of the operation and its settings. If a recipient questions the result, reproducing it from the original is faster than guessing which options were used.

What to know before you start

  • The render scale is fixed at two, so there is no resolution control.
  • Each page downloads as a separate PNG rather than a ZIP archive.
  • There is no OCR; the PNG contains no text layer.
  • Large or complex pages can produce big files and take time to render.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a resolution setting; the scale is fixed.
  • Looking for a ZIP download when each page arrives separately.
  • Assuming the PNGs contain selectable text.
  • Blocking multiple downloads in the browser and losing files.

Troubleshooting

If only some pages download, the browser may have blocked multiple downloads; allow them for this site.

If a page is blank, its content may not render in pdf.js.

If the file is very large, the page contains a lot of detail at the fixed scale.

If the conversion stops, a malformed page may have failed to render.

A copy, not an edit
  • Keep the source file.
  • Check for a text layer.
  • Unlock before editing.
