What PDF Watermark helps you do
Stamp a text watermark on the pages of a PDF, such as a status, a name or a confidentiality label. You control the wording, opacity and angle, and the label is drawn as a single gray text element on every page. It is a visible mark rather than a security control.
Watermarking runs in your browser with a local PDF library; the file is not uploaded.
How it works
A PDF stores positioned drawing instructions rather than flowing paragraphs, which is why editing one is different from editing a document. Page content, fonts, images and annotations are separate objects, and a page only carries a text layer if the producer wrote one. Most tools here rebuild or render the file in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js; the formats that need a full office engine, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A and HTML, use the Haivix service and say so in their privacy note. Every tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched. Because content is placed by coordinates, extraction often returns text runs in visual order rather than sentences, and columns or tables can arrive interleaved.
How to use PDF Watermark
- Load the PDF and enter the watermark text.
- Set the opacity and angle.
- Apply the watermark and download the marked PDF.
- Check a dense page and a light page for legibility.
When to use it
- Mark a draft or confidential document before sharing it.
- Add a recipient or reference label to a PDF.
- Brand internal copies without editing each page by hand.
- Mark a sample or evaluation copy.
- Add a date or version label across a document.
- Discourage casual reuse of a shared file.
When not to use it
- Do not use it as access control; the text can still be removed or ignored.
- Do not use very long text; the label does not wrap.
- Do not watermark a signed document if the signature covers the page bytes.
Example
A CONFIDENTIAL watermark is drawn diagonally across every page at 30 percent opacity. The label is placed once per page, starting a quarter of the page width from the left and halfway up, so it sits across the middle rather than tiled. A long sentence can run past the right edge because the text does not wrap.
What you can do with PDF Watermark
- Add custom text to every page.
- Set opacity from 10 to 80 percent.
- Choose a 45 degree, horizontal or -45 degree angle.
- Apply the same watermark across the document.
- Save the marked file as a new PDF.
- Run the stamping locally in the browser.
Example: work on a copy and check the output
Keep the original file. These tools produce a download rather than editing in place, so a failed operation never damages the source.
Check whether the PDF has a real text layer before relying on extraction. A scan is an image, so text tools return little or nothing until OCR has run.
Unlock encrypted files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be reordered, cropped or annotated until it has been opened with the correct password.
Review the output before sending it on. Fonts can substitute, overlays do not always remove what is underneath, and page boxes can shift content near the edges.
Note the page size and orientation before laying anything out. A mixed document can contain portrait and landscape pages, and a tool that assumes one size may crop or offset the others.
Keep a note of the operation and its settings. If a recipient questions the result, reproducing it from the original is faster than guessing which options were used.
What to know before you start
- A watermark is a visual overlay and does not prevent copying or editing by itself.
- Very dense or dark pages can reduce watermark legibility.
- The label is a single line of 48-point text at a fixed position; it is not tiled or centered.
- Long text can overflow the page because there is no wrapping.
Common mistakes
- Using a long sentence that overflows the page.
- Setting opacity so high that the watermark obscures the content.
- Expecting the mark to prevent copying.
- Watermarking a signed file and invalidating the signature.
Troubleshooting
If the watermark is invisible, the opacity may be too low for a dark page.
If it covers important text, lower the opacity or choose a horizontal angle.
If the text runs off the page, shorten it.
If the file will not load, unlock it first.
