What Remove Empty Lines helps you do
Drop blank lines and lines that contain only whitespace. It is the quick cleanup for pasted text that arrived with double spacing or stray empty rows before import. Paragraph breaks are removed as well, so it is best for lists, rows and compacted copy rather than prose that needs visible spacing.
Empty-line removal runs locally in your browser; nothing is sent to Haivix.
How it works
Each cleanup tool applies one deterministic string transformation to the pasted text inside the page. There is no parser, model or server call: the same input and options produce the same output every time. The browser holds the text in memory, so the result updates as you edit and is not retained after the tab closes. Because the transformation is literal, non-breaking spaces, mixed line endings and tabs may behave differently from a word processor; compare a short sample before applying it to a large file. The page never rewrites the source on disk, so the only undo is your own copy.
How to use Remove Empty Lines
- Paste the text with blank lines.
- Remove the empty lines.
- Check that the remaining lines are the ones you expect.
- Copy the compacted result.
When to use it
- Clean up text copied from a PDF that added blank lines.
- Prepare a list for import where blank rows cause errors.
- Tighten double-spaced output into single-spaced copy.
- Remove empty rows from a pasted log excerpt.
- Compact a list that has a blank line between every item.
- Clean OCR output before splitting it into records.
When not to use it
- Do not use it on prose where blank lines mark paragraphs.
- Do not use it on code where blank lines separate blocks.
- Do not expect it to remove duplicate non-empty lines.
Example
A document with an empty line after every sentence keeps only the sentences after the cleanup. A list with a blank row between each item becomes one continuous line per item, which is easier to import. The paragraph structure is gone, so keep the original if spacing matters.
What you can do with Remove Empty Lines
- Remove lines that are completely empty.
- Remove lines that contain only spaces or tabs.
- Keep every line that has at least one visible character.
- Preserve the order and content of the remaining lines.
- Copy the compacted result in one action.
- Run the cleanup locally with no upload.
Example: verify the cleanup on a sample
Paste a short, representative sample first rather than the whole file. Check the edges: leading and trailing spaces, blank lines, tabs and any non-breaking spaces the source may contain.
Apply the transformation and compare the sample with the original. If the change is correct, run the full text; if not, adjust the source or choose a different cleanup tool.
Copy or download the result and keep the original until the destination import succeeds. Most of these tools are one-way, so the source file is the only reliable undo.
If the text came from a PDF, a spreadsheet or a CMS, look for invisible characters before blaming the cleanup. A no-break space or a soft hyphen can survive the pass and still break a comparison downstream.
Run the cleaned text through the destination's preview or import step before deleting anything. A formatting change that looks right in the textarea can still fail a strict parser.
What to know before you start
- A line containing only spaces is removed, which may merge intentional spacing.
- All blank lines are removed, so paragraph breaks are lost.
- There is no option to keep a single blank line between blocks.
- It removes lines, not duplicate content or trailing spaces inside a line.
Common mistakes
- Removing the blank lines that separated paragraphs.
- Using it on source code and collapsing intentional spacing.
- Assuming a line with invisible characters will be kept; it is removed if it is whitespace-only.
- Expecting the tool to deduplicate repeated lines.
- Not checking the result before pasting it into a form.
Troubleshooting
If a line remains, it contains at least one non-whitespace character; inspect it for a stray symbol.
If the output is empty, every line was blank or whitespace-only.
If paragraph spacing disappears, that is expected; re-add blank lines after import if the destination needs them.
If Windows line endings look odd, normalize the line breaks first.
Related standards and documentation
- Unicode whitespace includes characters such as the no-break space that may not look like a space.
- Line endings may be CRLF, LF or CR before cleanup; normalize them first when the target requires one style.
- The tools operate on Unicode text, not on bytes in a legacy encoding.
- Compare a short sample first.
- Watch for non-breaking spaces and tabs.
- Keep the original until the import works.
