YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube link and download the video thumbnail in every size YouTube actually published.

What YouTube Thumbnail Downloader helps you do

Every YouTube video ships with a set of thumbnail images at fixed sizes, and they are useful beyond the video page: a course slide, a link preview, a newsletter, or a poster. This tool reads the video ID from any YouTube link and lists the sizes that actually exist, with the real pixel dimensions. It saves images only, never the video.

The URL you paste is parsed in your browser to find the video ID. Each thumbnail is then fetched directly from YouTube's i.ytimg.com image servers, and the file you download is saved from memory. Haivix does not proxy, log, or store the URL or the images.

How to use YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

  1. Paste a YouTube video URL — a normal watch link, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts link, or the 11-character video ID.
  2. Select Get thumbnails and wait while the tool checks which sizes YouTube published for that video.
  3. Preview a thumbnail at full size, or download the JPG in the largest size you need.
  4. Only download images you have permission to use.

When to use it

  • Grab a video thumbnail for a slide, article, or newsletter where you have permission to use it.
  • Check how a video's thumbnail looks at each size while preparing a link preview.
  • Download the thumbnail of your own video without screenshotting the video page.
  • Compare the current thumbnail with a cached social preview.
  • Get a poster image for an embedded video.
  • Archive the thumbnail of your own published video.

When not to use it

  • Do not download a video; this tool only returns images.
  • Do not reuse another creator's thumbnail without permission.
  • Do not expect private, deleted or region-blocked videos to return images.

Example

Pasting https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ lists the max resolution, standard, high quality, medium quality, and low quality thumbnails for that video, each with its real pixel size and a Download JPG button. A newer upload without an HD source may only list the smaller sizes.

What you can do with YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

  • Parse a watch URL, youtu.be link, Shorts, embed, live or youtube-nocookie link.
  • Accept an 11-character video ID on its own.
  • List only the thumbnail sizes YouTube actually published.
  • Show the real pixel dimensions for each size.
  • Preview an image before downloading it.
  • Download the JPG directly from YouTube's image server.

Example: prepare a course slide

Paste the video link into the field and select Get thumbnails. The tool extracts the ID and checks the standard sizes rather than guessing a URL.

Open the largest available preview and check that the image has the title and framing you expected. Some creators change the thumbnail after publishing, so the current file may differ from an older screenshot.

Download the size that matches the slide or card. Use the max resolution for print and a smaller size for a link preview.

What to know before you start

  • Only the thumbnail sizes YouTube published are offered, so older or low-resolution uploads may not have a max resolution image.
  • This tool saves images, not video. Downloading YouTube videos is against YouTube's Terms of Service.
  • Private, deleted, and region-blocked videos may return no thumbnails at all.
  • Thumbnails belong to the uploader, so only download images you have the right to use.
  • The tool does not verify image licensing or attribution requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting a playlist or channel URL instead of a video link.
  • Assuming a max resolution image exists for every video.
  • Using a thumbnail without the uploader's permission.
  • Downloading the smallest size and then scaling it up for print.
  • Confusing a thumbnail with a frame from the video.

Troubleshooting

If no thumbnails appear, check that the link contains an 11-character video ID and that the video is public.

If the max resolution option is missing, YouTube did not publish that size for the video. Use the largest listed image.

If the preview is broken, the image request may be blocked by a content blocker or a temporary network issue. Reload and try again.

If a download fails, right-click the preview and save the image, or try another listed size.

If the thumbnail looks different from the video page, the creator may have changed it; the tool returns the current file from YouTube's image server.

If the image is very small, the video may predate the larger thumbnail sizes. Use the largest listed option rather than upscaling a tiny file.

If a link with a timestamp or playlist parameter fails, remove everything after the video ID and search again.

If the download opens the image instead of saving it, use the download control or right-click the preview and choose Save image as.

Images only, current files
  • Only the sizes that exist are listed.
  • The thumbnail may have changed since publish.
  • Check permission before reusing it.
