How to Add or Extract GST and VAT From a Price
Add or extract GST/VAT from a price with a rate you enter, then read net, tax, and gross. Arithmetic only.
Inclusive and exclusive prices are easy to mix up. If a quote is “$1,000 plus 15% VAT,” the customer pays more than $1,000. If a shelf price already includes tax, the net amount is smaller than the sticker. The same rate, two different questions.
The Haivix GST / VAT Calculator does that arithmetic in the browser. Enter an amount, a rate you already know, and whether the amount excludes or includes tax. It shows net, tax, and gross, formatted in USD, PKR, GBP, EUR, AED, or INR. It does not look up country rates or file a return.
Exclusive vs inclusive
Excludes tax: net equals the amount you typed; tax is amount × rate ÷ 100; gross is net plus tax. Use this when you priced before tax and need the customer total.
Includes tax: net is amount ÷ (1 + rate/100); tax is amount minus net; gross equals the amount you typed. Use this to split a tax-inclusive invoice line. Results update live as you change fields.
Rate, currency, and rounding
You type the rate (0–100, default 15). There is no ZIP or country table, no US sales-tax lookup, and no CGST/SGST/IGST split. Currency only changes how numbers are displayed with two fraction digits—it is not a foreign-exchange converter.
Display rounding follows the browser’s Intl.NumberFormat, not cash-rounding rules for a specific jurisdiction. Copy tax breakdown copies the three stat lines as text. Clear sets the amount to 0 and leaves rate, mode, and currency as they are.
When to move to an invoice or a margin check
This tool is one amount and one rate. Line items, discounts, and a PDF belong in the Invoice Generator. If you are setting a selling price after cost and fees, use the Profit Margin Calculator rather than treating tax as profit.
The on-tool warning is the right one: tax rules, exemptions, rounding, and filing requirements vary. Confirm the rate and treatment with your accountant or the tax authority for that sale.
Checklist before you record the number
Open the GST / VAT Calculator, enter amount and rate, pick inclusive or exclusive, and read net, tax, and gross. Numbers stay in the browser.
- You chose exclusive vs inclusive to match the quote or receipt.
- The rate is the one that applies to that line, not a guess.
- You are not using currency format as an FX conversion.
- Compound tax, reduced rates, or splits were handled outside this tool.
- The copied breakdown matches what you will enter in bookkeeping.
