What PDF Crop helps you do
Crop an even margin from all four sides of every PDF page to trim whitespace or remove unwanted edges. The margin is entered in points, where 72 points equal one inch. Cropping rewrites both the media box and the crop box, so viewers and printers agree on the new page size.
Cropping is applied in your browser and the file is not uploaded to Haivix.
How it works
A PDF stores positioned drawing instructions rather than flowing paragraphs, which is why editing one is different from editing a document. Page content, fonts, images and annotations are separate objects, and a page only carries a text layer if the producer wrote one. Most tools here rebuild or render the file in your browser with pdf-lib and pdf.js; the formats that need a full office engine, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF/A and HTML, use the Haivix service and say so in their privacy note. Every tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched. Because content is placed by coordinates, extraction often returns text runs in visual order rather than sentences, and columns or tables can arrive interleaved.
How to use PDF Crop
- Load the PDF and enter the margin to trim from each side.
- Check the page preview to confirm the area being removed.
- Apply the crop and download the result.
- Open the file and verify nothing important was clipped.
When to use it
- Trim scanner margins before printing on smaller paper.
- Remove a defect or note from the page edge.
- Tighten a document's layout for on-screen reading.
- Prepare slides with a consistent white border removed.
- Crop a scan that has a wide dark edge.
- Normalize page sizes across a merged document.
When not to use it
- Do not use it when only one page needs a different margin; the value applies to all.
- Do not treat cropping as deletion of the hidden content.
- Do not crop so far that headers, footers or page numbers disappear.
Example
Cropping 36 points, half an inch, from every edge reduces the visible page area while leaving the content coordinates in place. The same margin applies to every page, so a page with a narrower original margin loses more of its content. Text outside the new box is clipped from view but may still exist in the file.
What you can do with PDF Crop
- Trim a uniform margin from all sides.
- Apply the crop to every page.
- Set the margin in points.
- Rewrite both the media and crop boxes.
- Download the cropped PDF.
- Run the crop locally in the browser.
Example: work on a copy and check the output
Keep the original file. These tools produce a download rather than editing in place, so a failed operation never damages the source.
Check whether the PDF has a real text layer before relying on extraction. A scan is an image, so text tools return little or nothing until OCR has run.
Unlock encrypted files first. A password-protected PDF cannot be reordered, cropped or annotated until it has been opened with the correct password.
Review the output before sending it on. Fonts can substitute, overlays do not always remove what is underneath, and page boxes can shift content near the edges.
Note the page size and orientation before laying anything out. A mixed document can contain portrait and landscape pages, and a tool that assumes one size may crop or offset the others.
Keep a note of the operation and its settings. If a recipient questions the result, reproducing it from the original is faster than guessing which options were used.
What to know before you start
- Cropping hides content outside the new box; it does not delete the underlying data.
- Different pages with different margins may need separate crop values.
- The margin is uniform on all four sides; there is no per-side control.
- It does not reflow or rescale content to the new page size.
Common mistakes
- Entering millimeters while the field expects points.
- Cropping a mixed-size document with one uniform margin.
- Assuming the hidden content is permanently deleted.
- Clipping a page number or signature in the margin.
Troubleshooting
If the page is blank after cropping, the margin exceeded the page size.
If the crop looks uneven, the original pages had different dimensions.
If content still appears outside the crop in an editor, the editor may show the full media box.
If the file will not load, unlock it first.
